Review* Happy Lesson by Sean Russell (Naruto) Animation by Media Works American Broadcaster: Anime Network Creator: Mutsumi Sasaki |

| Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance, Slice of Life Series Summary Chitose isn't your average student at the Private Koyomi Campus High School. Yes he deals with normal everyday teenage problems, but try going to a school where you teachers live in your house. In addition to them living in his house, they are also his mothers. Mutsuki, Uzuki, Satsuki, Yayou and Kisuragi work together to make Chitose's life as chaotic as possible. This series is created by Mutsumi Sasaki of Futakoi and Futakoi Alternative. The animation is done by Mediaworks, the company behind Azumanga Diaoh, Comic Party and Impressions One word that comes to mind while viewing this series is excess. The perversion between the mothers and Chitose is a bit creepy. Even though none of them share the same bloodline, the relationship implies a barrier where sex should not cross. There is an overuse of distorted animation and some borderline stomach turning visualizations. The most shocking moment involves a long metal tube and an open ear canal. There's even a twisted scene involving the disection of sweet little baby chicks. Characters Every character in this episode is a little over the top. The most annoying character isn't the hyperactive mom that loves to dress in ridiculous costumes or the mom that likes to blow things up. The most nails on the chalk board irritating character is the school president Nankorobi. Eleven minutes into the episode she only distracts from the entertaining scenes between Chitose and his mothers. She's abrassive, needy and makes for a weak antagonist. Good thing the show focuses more on the five mothers with polarized differences. In order of their appeal, Mutsuki Ichinomonji serves as Chitose's home room teacher and seemingly favorite mom. It's through her that you discover the show's offbeat premise. She's by no means normal, but positively foils in comparison to the rest of the moms. The loonest of the five moms is Uzuki Shitennou. She is the Fine Arts teacher and most eccentric character in the entire show. She actually has some comical moments that's thrown into the mix of absurd slapstick. Kisaragi Ninomai is the school's Chemistry teacher who dabbles in blowing things up. Even though she teaches a complex science, she appears to be the most dimwitted person on the show. The fourth mother is the most disposible given her weak character. Yayou Sanzein is the school Physician and the most full figured of the five. She easily beats out the gruff and unlikeable Satsuki Gokajou. Satsuki is the Physical Education teacher for the school and toughest of the bunch. Music The opening theme is "Telescope" by Sleepin' Johnny Fish. I don't really care for the theme which can't be said for the closing theme song. Accomplished voice actor Akiko Nakagawa records her first Anime theme "Dream Tow, Tokyo Life". The song is catchy and worthy of being downloaded. It's also the theme that plays during the ADV preview. Pros The most enjoyable part of the series is Chitose's interactions with his moms. The scenes are extremely maniac with a lot of visual stimulation. It sometimes verges on the absurd but doesn't leave you bored. It shows some promise with its zany premis and with five mothers in one house, there's bound to be some interesting scenes. Cons The english voice actors seem to be lacking a certain spark. Most noticable is Lee Eddy as Satasuki, who's previous work can be counted on one hand. Even though there is a lot to work with, so far the story is extremely weak. The show sometimes borders of sappy but falls short of losing the viewer. The subtitles rotate at an even pace but the building signs sometimes appear for less than a second. It too me two minutes to pause the DVD to find the name of the school. Overall Feel With just watching the first episode, it's hard for me to know if I'm going to watch the entire series. I'm not sure there's enough to warrant anymore episodes considering the lack of substance. It reminds me of Azumanga Daioh but falls short in capturing its charm. I hope something actually happens in the story or I can see this series turning out to be a disaster. Grade: C+ |
