Well this is a different anime than I usually review, but once I start watching a series, I have to finish it, that's just a rule. But this one is more mecha-action than anything. We're in the future, year 2015, being attacked by giant biotech creatures from who knows where called Angels. Oh and half the human race is dead.

There’s a new Tokyo where the story takes place called Tokyo 3 (apparently the other two were destroyed along the way). This city also has the ability to sink into an underground chamber for safety when an Angel attacks. The city is protected by the secretive government super corporation called NERV, sort of a United Nations deal. A group of teenagers (of course) are trained to pilot and operate giant mecha’s called Evangelions to combat Angels. Never mind the fact that operating them seems to destroy both their minds and bodies in the process.

So the main character who comes to pilot an Evangelion is Shinji Ikari who happens to be the son of the Director of NERV. If you’re thinking “Oh that’s cool, his dad runs it,” yeah not so cool. They pretty much hate each other with good reason, his dad treats him horribly. Shinji is forced into piloting one of these Evangelions and into battles not just for fighting but to survive and save the human race.

The story gets confusing and slows a bit at places, but it does have quite a few interesting plot twists and does provide good background for the gaps in the story (What the he**? Why are Angels attacking us and kids are supposed to save us? Don’t worry, you find all that out).

More characters come about as the story progresses, some new pilots who provide moments of humor and others you can’t background on if you were wondering about them. It gets way intense though as the story moves onward, both with character relations and the ever present Angel things attacking and blowing everything away.

The ending I thought was lacking a bit in the ‘time to explain everything’ department. Well it does explain a bit, but its one that leaves you with a few questions. Ever see a movie where the ending let you interpret in your own way what happens? Yeah like that. And yeah I hate those kind of endings. But that’s my preference. If you’re a big mecha fighting for survival type of anime fan, you’ll definitely want this one under your anime belt. Later days anime mistresses (and misters?).
