| Genre: Comedy, Fantasy, Romance, Shoujo, Supernatural Okay, awesome anime this one is. Merges a number of genre's into one which is pretty amazing since its only a 26 episode series. We've got love, romance, magical stuff, action, and school life. Daisuke Niwa is the main character in this one who just happens to have the alter ego of the Phantom Thief known as Dark. Sounds iffy I know, but let me keep going. Daisuke gets up the courage to finally confess to Risa Haruda, his school girl crush, when she tells him, “You’re a good friend.” Ouch. That day when Daisuke thinks of Risa he turns into Dark for the first time. Daisuke was unaware of him up until now. Dark has black angel-like wings and other magical powers that come into handy in his thievery. Oh yeah thievery. Dark steals magical or objects that have mystical powers and then Daisuke’s family somewhat hoards them in their little Wiccan-like dungeon. (Daisuke’s dad, grandfather, and so on all were their own versions of Dark, family secret more or less) Dark has a nemesis for undisclosed reasons who goes by the name Krad. He is similar to Dark in his powers, and possesses Daisuke’s classmate Hiwatari. Now Krad wears all white, has white wings, doesn’t steal anything, and is the bad one….And don’t get me started on why Dark wears all black and is named Dark and the other wears all white and is named Krad. Whatever. Risa, Daisuke’s crush, has a twin sister who’s the exact opposite of her named Riku Harada who is a good friend of Daisuke. And things develop there with romantic feelings and such later in the story. The support characters help the story fill out well to; Daisuke’s classmates, his family, and the magical beings that come about from Dark’s nightly escapades. So Dark needs to gather these mystical objects, in short because they are like bad magic objects. All of them were created by an ancient family who was renowned for the arts; painting, sculpting, music, so on. And their greatest creation, and final, was a giant mirror called Black Wings. Dark and Krad were born from this, and therefore it seals them as well. The first episode we see Dark and Krad fighting, short scene but wicked awesome, as Krad seals Dark along with him by activating Black Wings. Sounds like a lot of info to take in but the story flows really well. It never gets boring and doesn’t get too complicated. And the cool thing is that there are subtle little hints about the story that if you don’t pick up the first time, you will the second time around. Definitely worth watching, will have you wanting a sequel series, but alas, none came. So relish in it while you can anime minions! -Kyo- |
