Review* Mononoke Hime
by Colton Haupt (Gatts)
First off I am terribly sorry everyone. The last few months have been hell to me, but don't fret, I am back and have slated a new Princess Mononoke review for everyone.

Princess Mononoke is by far the film that made Miyazaki so memorable. It's sheer genius allowed it to make box office records in Japan, outdoing every movie by far. Now it is your turn to bask in its glory! Princess Mononoke starts off with young Ashitaka. He is a boy that loves the forest and his cool Elk he rides on. He is very in tune with the forest spirits and believes in many gods whom wander the land. As the story begins, Ashitaka is riding to his city to tell everyone the horrid news of the cursed god, who was a giant boar now consumed by hate. After warning the others, Ashitaka slays the Boar although it was a tough feat. However, the victory doesn’t come without its consequences. Ashitaka now has the evil spirit that consumed the boar and he must learn how to get rid of the curse before it kills him. The witch doctor of the city casts Ashitaka out of the city being aware of the great dangers awaiting him.

As the story presses on, Ashitaka encounters many feats he must surpass. On his journey he runs in to a village that is full of hardworking men and women. They basically do nothing but build arms for "My Lady" who is the ruler of their land. The village gave him a warm welcome until Princess Mononoke comes and rages war on the city. Unfortunately the Wolf Gods who raised her hate humans and are in the middle of a war to kill them all. Ashitaka eventually leaves and heads deep into the forest, mind you he is very injured at this time. He Passes out in the Holy river where the Deer God lives. Suddenly Princess Mononoke revives him and soon Ashitaka realizes the wolves mean him no harm and that Princess Mononoke and him are the only 2 humans left willing to keep peace with all the gods. Soon enough all the gods are against each other and the humans. Watch Princess Mononoke to find out how or if Ashitaka gets revived and does he ultimately find true love in Mononoke?

Analysis

Princess Mononoke was given a pg 13 rating in theaters for violence and language. I’d have to say this anime is more mellow than most but I would stick with that rating. I loved this movie, although after watching it 20 times in your life you generally get bored of things.

Audio - A great quality all the way around this aspect

Animation - C+ Yes I know this is biased because I don’t really like Miyazaki's Drawing style

Dub - B Don’t like mainstream actors being voice actors

Japanese - A+ everything fits perfectly

Overall - B Something everyone should see although replay value may be substantially lower.
